Media Lesson Week of 5/3

Optional Meeting on Wednesdays at 10 a.m.
Just drop in and say hello, ask questions, or share what you are reading. This is not required.

Appreciating Descriptive Literature
Watch this video of Owl Moon. Pay attention to the vivid descriptions provided by the author.

Write about what you see. Choose one picture and use descriptive language.

or draw a picture to go with this quote from Hatchet by Gary Paulson:
“Everything was green, so green it went into him.
The forest was mostly made up of pines and spruce,
with strands of some low brush spread here and there and thick grass
and some other kind of small brush all over...
The country around the lake was moderately hilly, but the hills were small...
and there were very few rocks except to his left.
There lay a rocky ridge that stuck out overlooking the lake, about 20 feet high.”

Media Lesson 4/27 - 5/1

Device Free Moments
This week you are going to try and find some device free times.
First let's do a few things. On your left, you will notice a link to Mr. Bragg's Library. Click on this and watch a video story read aloud.
Let's look at why being device free is important:

Create a Media Balance Chart like this one: Media Balance Chart. Think of how using devices makes you feel. Fill out the chart and notice how often you use devices in a day.
Finally, choose a device free activity to do from this list (Some of these require devices. Try and choose something that does not):

Lesson for This Week

This is only for students who are looking for a technology based lesson. Those who are looking for lessons without computers should use the NHUSD menus which are available here: Distance Learning NHUSD

Tour A Museum

Go to Google Arts and Culture by clicking on the image above. Take a tour of several famous museums from around the world. Have you ever been in a museum? Share your experience with a family member. Think about which museum you would like to visit in person someday. Does any of the artwork inspire you to create? Use some of the materials that you have at home to create a piece of art. Paper, pencils, pens, crayons, markers, colored pencils, playdough, clay, and paints are some ideas of materials to use.
You can even make your own clay as seen here. Please have an adult help you do this:

Tips for Using This Blog

Helpful Tips:
I've made a few changes since the last time I have shown this site to students. Many of the links have been moved to pages on the top of the blog. So, for example, if you are looking for Online Reading Sites you would choose the link from the top that takes you to that page. You will notice that the middle of the blog will show your desired sites. The sides of the blog will continue to show the book resources and some of the links that haven't yet been moved.

A lot of students haven't noticed that most books have links that lead to a read aloud or a description/trailer of the story. It will be helpful in guiding your reading choices.

Pictures that are on the main page will guide you to that link. However, when you navigate to another page. The pictures are just a link to that picture. Look the the right of that picture to click on the links that you need.

I am trying to make this page more inviting. As always, I welcome suggestions for links to include here.

Hopefully you will continue to find things you enjoy and have fun learning new things!

Ready for Research

We are gearing up for research in First through Fifth grades. The general feeling is excitement. Students enjoy choosing a favorite thing to learn more about. In Media, we focus on the entire process. We learn to respect copyright rules, give proper credit for others' work, take notes that are meaningful, and create a project that we can share with others.

Kindergarten has been enjoying their first check outs of the year. The TK class and Kindergarten are working on understanding their place in a diverse world. We have stories that we discuss that share world perspectives that may be different from their own.

All classes seem to be having fun in Media!
